Guam

About Guam

Guam is a tiny tropical island, with a land mass of about 209 square miles, located in the western Pacific Ocean along the equator.  Guam is part of Oceania and is the southernmost island in the Mariana Islands chain.

One interesting fact about Guam is the island is part of the United States of America and it is the eastern most territory which is part of the U.S.  It is also the only U.S. territory which is located across the International Date Line making it one day ahead the rest of the U.S.  In fact, this is where Guam gets it's slogan "Where America's Day Begins", because it is the first territory of the U.S. to see the sunrise of a new day.

The island of Guam is a popular travel destination for tourists from Asian countries - especially from Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines.  Visitors from Japan make up the majority of the island's tourism market which is also the largest industry on the island.

Because tourism is Guam's largest industry there are many businesses which cater to tourists.  Visitors will find a whole range of tourist accommodations readily available on the island including hotels, car rental companies, tour operators and more.

The island of Guam even has it's own version of Hawaii's popular tourist area, Waikiki, which is named Tumon.  The village of Tumon is the heart of the tourism industry in Guam.  The main road which cuts through Tumon is lined from end-to-end on both sides of the road with hotels, restaurants, name-brand designer stores, and entertainment.  There is so much to see and do in Tumon, visitors may never even need to leave the village if there vacation is only a few days long.

Shopping on Guam is one of the major reasons people visit Guam, especially tourists from Japan.  The island of Guam is duty-free, meaning there are no taxes imposed on merchandise sold on the island.  When purchasing designer brand clothing and handbags like Gucci and Louis Vuitton this can amount to significant savings when compared to purchasing these designer products anywhere else in the United States.  This has made Guam a popular destination for travelers from Asia looking to purchase these high-class designer products.  Driving down Tumon, you will find the road lined with all the top designer brand shops.  The island also has three large shopping malls and centers with national US chain department stores like Macy's, Ross and Footlocker.  You can also find Kmart and Sears on the island.  In fact, the Kmart on Guam is one of the largest Kmart's in all of the world.

If your looking for a more quiet and relaxing setting spending some time in southern Guam can be a refreshing getaway from the hustle and bustle of Tumon.  Much of the southern portion of Guam is undeveloped in contrast to northern Guam which is the more modern and developed area of the island.  There is one main road which travels around the southern portion of Guam, mainly along the coastline.  When traveling down this road you'll see some small villages, bays and inlets, a scenic coastline and beaches.  There are many natural attractions along the way, but if your not familiar with the area they can be hard to find so it would be best to plan your visit to the southern area of Guam ahead of time.

Guam can be a fantastic destination for a tropical vacation in a remote part of the world.  Offering a mix of both modern life and untouched natural tropical beauty, the island has many things to offer travelers.
